Symantec Endpoint Protection: Windows XP, 7, and 8

Although the screenshots below reflect the SEP12WIN32.exe installation file, the step-by-step instructions also apply to the 64-bit version for Windows 7 and 8.

Installing Symantec

  1. Download the installation file for your computer 
    1. Click Windows XP or 7 (32-bit) installation file
      OR
    2. Click Windows 7 or 8 (64-bit) installation file
  2. When prompted, enter your DePauw Account username and password, and then click OK

  3. Locate the SEP32bitWIN.exe (or SEP64bitWIN) icon on the desktop, or wherever your computer saves downloaded files, and then double-click it

  4. In the Open File → Security Warning window click Run
  5. Click Next

  6. Select I accept the terms  in the license agreement and click Next

  7. Select Unmanaged client and click Next

  8. Select Typical and click Next

  9. If you do not wish to send file data to Symantec, uncheck the box. Otherwise, just click Next

  10. Click Install

Setting up automatic updates

  1. Open Symantec Endpoint Protection
  2. Click LiveUpdate

  3. Click Change settings

  4. For Client Management, click Configure Settings

  5. In the Client Management Settings window, select the Scheduled Updates tab
    1. For Frequency, select Daily
    2. For When – At:, select desired time
    3. Click OK

Scanning for viruses

  1. Click Scan for threats

  2. Choose either Active Scan or Full Scan
    1. Active Scan – scans only the most commonly infected areas; takes 1-2 minutes
    2. Full Scan – scans the entire computer; take 30-120 minutes

  3. If a virus(es) is found, you will be given the option to fix or quarantine the infected file, choose Fix
    1. Fix – removes a known virus from your computer
    2. Quarantine – isolates an unknown virus so it cannot spread
